Thinking beyond milk


The dairy industry is under bigger threat than ever to keep milk and milk products at the top of every food chart. Some of these trends will change the way milk is perceived.

The whole concept of a glass of milk being synonymous with ‘health’ and ‘nutrition’ is donning a new definition under the prying eyes of health inspectors across the globe. Milk now comes packaged in an array of shades and forms to fit the dietary regime of this generation - so much so that the latest dairy avatar trending in the market is the ‘milkless milk’. Dairy manufacturers and brands are changing their way of looking at their customers to understand their demands.
Here are some of the trends that will be governing the dairy industry globally:
Going Vegan: The biggest challenge faced by the dairy industry today is the sheer threat of being pushed off the shelf by consumers turning vegan and demanding vegan dairy options. Dairy sales in many countries are on a steep decline. According to research firm Mintel, dairy sales in US alone went down by 7 percent ($17.8 billion) in 2015 and is projected to drop another 11 percent through 2020. Consumers are moving to plant-based dairy alternatives which are bound to grab a huge market share. This whole transition has majorly been due to the rising consciousness about health where milk and milk products are sliding down the food charts amidst rising awareness about the potential that various plants, seeds, and nuts hold sans the contamination of hormones and steroids found in cattle dairy.
